What is Marriage For?

The Strange Social History of our Most Intimate Institution

What is marriage for? The title’s question may seem laced with despair or anger, but Graff’s historical and personal work approaches the subject of marriage with fascination and sincere empathy. There is a tremendous effort to refrain from under-handed mockery and to embrace the female voice.

Also, though the cover praises it as critical reading for defence of same-sex marriage, this book is really defends marriage in all its forms - addressing the roles that race, family, money, sexuality, institution and children play in marriage.

What Is Marriage For? is a empathetic, ironic, and often hilarious romp through history, which challenges our modern views of marriage – especially our claims to an understanding of ‘traditional’ marriage.

It also advocates for same-sex marriage, though in a surprising way. Graff convinces without much argument at all: though the chronicle of marriage as presented in What is Marriage For? is turbulent and dramatic in its shifts, the method of understanding – and changing – marriage throughout history conforms to a brilliantly consistent pattern that becomes obvious the more you read.

In this way, Graff has simplified marriage through its complexities, and the message is a hopeful one: if marriage has changed so often through history in order to adapt to growing social needs, then it has the strength to survive the changes that come, and to support its own purposes.

Graff also engages with same-sex arguments with a deeper philosophy: if society embraces same-sex marriage, what will this mean for everyone? The right to same-sex marriage is not a simple yes or no; if you are married, how is your marriage constructed? What are your marriage’s purposes? In short, what is marriage for?

These questions transcend sexual orientation. Everyone who is considering marriage will find though-provoking material in this book.

So, if you think you know exactly what marriage is, let this book prove you wrong. Then, let it empower you. What is marriage for? Well, what do you think? What does it mean to you? If the so-called ‘traditional’ rationale is not very traditional, aren’t we free to fall on our own definitions? Besides, you may find some of the past (and truly traditional) forms of marriage resemble your current and dear ‘non-traditional’ one.

Greetings fellow wonderful people! This Thursday we have the tremendous privilege of having a guest speaker to host one of our discussions.

Tad is an openly gay officer with the RCMP (Some of you may remember him as the officer in our incredibly successful Pride Parade). He is heavily committed to the fight against bullying and homophobia, and runs numerous anti-bullying presentations, discussions and workshops. Tad has graciously offered to host just such an event this coming Thursday, and we are only too happy to have him.

So come on out everyone! It’s going to be a blast!

If you can’t read or see what the person is editing, here’s the written version:

1. Go to the ‘Basic Info’ section of your ‘About You’ page.

2. Right-click on the box that offers the “female” or “male” option of your sex, and click the option to “Inspect Element.”

3. Scroll to where the code deals with sex. There’s a formula saying “‘1’: female and ‘2’: male”. What you’ll want to do is right-click that whole line and opt to “Edit as HTML.”

4. When you get to that step, change the value of male to “0”, and change the word ‘male’ to whatever you want. (I did a smiley face).

4. You can close out of the code now. So, back in your ‘about you’ section, click on the option-box for female/male, and opt for whichever word you put inside your other option.

5. Make sure you save! Good luck, and happy genderfucking.

J.K.: No. But it did. I found people’s reaction to that very interesting and I’ll tell you why. By the time that I said that I had been working with these characters for 17 years. Now, not many writers have been with that same set of characters that long so I feel I can sort of speak for all of us who have to say it’s a very intense experience and inevitably you are going to know things about characters that are not in some cases… will be relevant. [….] As time went on and I got to know Dumbledore.. and this was before the publication of Philosopher’s Stone so at this point I’ve been with him for 7 years.. I knew he was gay. I just knew he was gay. And to me it was not a big deal. This is very old man who has a very terrible job to do and his gayness is not really relevant.

About the Project:

This is the first national campaign for First Nations youth across Canada to fight homophobia and normalize healthy sexuality!

First Nations youth from across Canada came together in March 2010 to create a national campaign about sexuality and fighting homophobia. These are the images created from the campaign which can be utilized as posters, postcards, as well as community newspaper inserts for articles and awareness.

About the Organization:

The Native Youth Sexual Health Network (NYSHN) is a North-America wide organization working on issues of healthy sexuality, cultural competency, youth empowerment, reproductive justice, and sex positivity by and for Native youth.

The reclamation and revitalization of traditional knowledge about people’s fundamental human rights over their bodies and spaces, intersected with present-day realities is fundamental to our work.

We work within the full spectrum of reproductive and sexual health for Indigenous peoples.
